You don’t look depressed
Ok. Why’s that?
You don’t look fed up, or sad, or pissed off
But I’m not; I live with depression
You don’t act depressed
Ok. Why’s that?
Your smiling, and you look happy
But I’m not; I live with depression
You don’t sound depressed
Ok. Why’s that?
You’re laughing and making jokes
But I still live with depression
You don’t appear depressed
Ok. Why’s that?
You look smart, clean shaven
It’s hard work, but I still live with depression
But you can’t be depressed
Ok. Why’s that?
You sit next to me at work and you work really hard, I’d know!
But trust me, my friend, I struggle with all the above, every day, because I live with depression

So true! I will never forget a phonecall I received from my sons college years ago when he was 17/18. “Please don’t panic or be scared I have some difficult news. Your son has been making plans to hang himself”. I had no clue there was anything at all wrong. Itchen college stepped in with lots of help, counselling and so on. I’d never have believed that he could have hidden that from me. So your poem is really spot on. xx
